Abstract

Eschatology, which is often understood as limited to the transcendent dimension of life after death, in Fazlur Rahman's view actually has broad relevance to the formation of moral consciousness and social responsibility of humankind. The purpose of this study is to analyse the concept of eschatology according to Fazlur Rahman as contained in Major Themes of the Qur'an and to examine the relevance of the values of the hereafter to human social life. The method used is qualitative analysis based on a literature study, examining the major works of Fazlur Rahman and relevant supporting literature. The results of the study show that the concept of eschatology in Fazlur Rahman's thinking covers four main aspects, namely the afterlife, intercession, mizan and hisab, and resurrection. These four aspects not only reflect faith in life after death, but also contain ethical values that have direct implications for human social behaviour. Afterlife values such as justice, responsibility, and moral awareness form the basis for the formation of a civilised, honest society oriented towards the common good. This research provides a conceptual contribution in expanding the understanding of Islamic eschatology from a theological dimension to a socio-ethical dimension relevant to contemporary humanitarian challenges.
